Variete shortlisted for the Oscars

The short animated film Variete (Variety) by director Roelof van den Bergh and produced by Arnoud Rijken and Michiel Snijders for il Luster Productions is shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Short Animated Film 2010. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 10 animated short films that will advance in the voting process for the 82nd Academy Awards®. Thirty-seven pictures had originally qualified in this category.

In Variete a young plate spinner starts his act by placing his parents on two of his plates. He spins them around fast, balancing them high on top of the long pole. Then he does the same with a girlfriend and a school teacher. While he keeps several poles with plates and with people in balance, the artist slowly grows older. His act becomes hectic and difficult when more and more people want him to spin them around and soon plates are beginning to fall….

Variete was selected for many international film festivals a.o. the Holland Animation Film Festival in Utrecht and the Sao Paulo International Animated Film Festival. The film was awarded with the Best Short Film Prize at the KROK film festival in the Ukrain.
It is the third animated short film by director Roelof van den Bergh, he previously directed the successful film Notice (2004) and Hell (2003).

The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday February 2, 2010. The Oscars will be awarded on March 7, 2010.
